This one has a kooky cover, but the music is surprisingly good! Of all the excellent vinyls I recently acquired, this one is on heaviest rotation. It sounds like a million 50s soundtrack orchestras we’ve heard before, and yet slightly better than 999,900 of them.

101 Strings for $1.00: East of Suez
The best treasures popup most unexpectedly! I’m at a Goodwill in Springfield, and they had four rows of records, but it ended up being 95% Christian music. It was disheartening to have made the long drive only to find endless praise to God! I have nothing against that, mind you, and perhaps I should make it a new hobby to delve into that parallel reality of non-satan-worshiping rock and roll.
So this one really surprised me – smack in the middle of the third crate I flipped through – sitting all alone among endless adorations of Jesus!
I’ve been wanting this one for a long time, ever since I saw it on the 101 Strings discogs page. Nice cover and in mint condition, one of the best in my collection! Bonus: excellent muzak too!

Picnic Cheesecake
I’m expecting to get page views from people searching for a picnic dessert recipe. Sorry, nope!
The Picnic Soundtrack cover is an excellent example of male cheesecake, a rarely seen genre. Though technically, it’s not exactly cheesecake because the torn shirt is indeed part of the plot, and not just male chestiness for the sake of selling records. I’m still labelling it cheesecake though. Look at William Holden sucking in that belly.
Excellent movie from the 50s, one of Holden’s best. It’s too bad the record I got is scratchy. Moonglow, the theme track heard when Holden and Kim Novak dance together at the big picnic, is a treasure and should be on the playlist of any cocktail party.
Haysi Fantayzee – Shiny Shiny
Sandy loves this track and flipped when we saw it at a Goodwill on the coast. One hit wonder of the early 80s, great cover, it’s on rotation at Casa de Thrifty.
Honky Tonk Piano
These are easy to find. The old, old school equivalent of house/trance cds with hot babes on the covers. discogs.com
Crazy Otto makes an appearance too!
Love is Blue
I’ve loved this track my entire life. I would probably put it in my top 5 favorite songs. So it was a “now it all makes sense” moment when I learned recently that “Love is Blue” was #1 on the charts for five weeks leading up to my entering the world March 1968. So I’ve loved this track for my entire life plus, and buy every record I find with it. There are more than you might think!
Good luck finding the first disc below (top left) in a thrift store. But I’ve seen the Paul Muriat #1 version with equally lovely cheesecake cover a few times. The 101 Strings was a great find for me, and Johnny Mann had one of his best tracks with it. Claudine Longet’s version is nicely done, but not my favorite, which would be the 101 Strings. An “eyes bug out” moment and a three category match: 101 Strings, Love is Blue and Cheesecake.
I’ve picked up all of these for $3 or less each, except for the first one, which I am hoping to find someday!
