I have a lifelong love of music, and I simply want to share my joy and interest in vinyl records!
I built an excellent collection when I was a younger DJ and Tower Records employee (Webmaster: 1995-2003) – but I stopped buying vinyl after CDs and MP3s came along.
In the summer of 2014, I stumbled onto a Goodwill $0.10/ea vinyl record sale, bought a ton of records, dragged my Technics 1200 turntables out of storage and got hooked again!
We mainly play music on the vinyl format these days at home, because it really does sound so much better than coming out of the computer. Pumping through an 18″ sub and JBL Eons, I have been having transcendent experiences with music again, for the first time in many years.
I enjoy collecting not just the music, but also the cover art, which is often better than the music inside. Old vinyls* are highly collectable, I consider them art, and focusing on thrift stores keeps it cheap, while resurrecting truly excellent music.
This is my cat. Uploaded January 28, 2006, he was the very first cat dj to go viral:
“Monkey” died of cancer in 2016, and enjoyed a lifetime of success on the internet and international television, all because of this silly video of him spinning vinyl.
A couple weeks after he passed, I came across the 12″ single of Monkey by George Michael, and was blown away by the timing and coincidence. And then George Michael died only a couple months later.
* I hear the kids these days are calling records “vinyls”, and I think it’s cute and I don’t care what they call them as long they keep buying and supporting them.
The vinyl is final!
